Tim Farron MP

Tim Farron MP"Our farmers are the heart of rural Britain but they live in a constant state of uncertainty. Too many have been forced out by a combination of supermarket greed and cheap foreign competition."

"Crippled by rising input costs, low farmgate prices and an unforgiving market, the NFU's manifesto addresses the real problems of Britain's farmers by placing them at the heart of policy decision making."

"By 2050, the world's population is expected to reach 9bn and to keep pace we will require a 70% rise in food production. It's clear that the type of change needed to overcome the challenges to our food system can't be achieved by a Labour government which created the problem. Nor can they be solved by a Conservative party which seems intent on dealing with the symptoms rather than the causes of these problems."

"The NFU's manifesto provides the perfect blueprint for how the UK can move to a sustainable, secure supply of food while preserving a natural, healthy environment."

I live in Norfolk; i've just heard on BBC Look East that a farmer in South Norfolk is giving up his herd because the price he's getting for his milk doesn't cover production costs. The report also states that other farmers in the area are likely to follow suit. This situation is a disgrace. My father was a herdsman, and I'm very aware of the hard work and dedication that dairying demands. A few pence more for the farmer is a life-line, those few pence on a litre of milk to the consumer are hardly noticeable. We should take a leaf from French farmers and take to the streets. This coalition that purports to support rural communities should not allow this to happen.
