Why Science Matters for Farming

The world population is growing fast - it's estimated there will be nine billion mouths to feed by 2050. UK agriculture needs to produce more food, using fewer inputs and with a reduced environmental footprint.

Farmers and growers are ready and willing to meet these challenges, but government funding of vital research and development projects is declining. The Why Science Matters for Farming campaign, launched at the House of Commons in October 2008, calls on decision-makers to recognise the importance of productive and efficient farming as a goal for scientific R&D and also aims to inspire the next generation of agricultural scientists.
